BLOX Now and Subscription

Set-up

  1. Make sure a BLOX CMS subscription service is enabled.
    • Currently, only native BLOX CMS subscription services are supported.
  2. Go to Design / Blocks and open the Now app URL (e.g., nowapp).
  3. Find Paywall settings in the Page customizations panel.
  4. Select the "Paywall restrictions" checkbox & select 'Enabled'.

The paywall is now set-up for the app.

  • Note that there are no other settings for the paywall in the Page customizations panel of the Now app URL in Design / Blocks
  • This is because the other paywall settings come from the editorial section/URL of the articles displayed in the app.

How the paywall works in the app:

If content is restricted in the app (i.e., the paywall's enabled), users will get a prompt to login.

After users login, if they don’t have a subscription, they’ll be redirected to a paywall message prompting them to purchase a subscription.

The paywall messages are configurable through the Utility: Text promo block that’s placed in android/iOS Now app URLs in Design / Blocks.

Notes for iOS messaging for subscriptions:

  • The iOS messages instruct the end user to go to the website to learn more about accessing restricted content.
  • We cannot use "subscription" or "buy now" verbiage in iOS apps as this is a direct violation of Apple's Store policies.
  • Remove, incorporated above.
  • Apple only wants purchases made through their store so there can't be any links to purchase/buy subscriptions in iOS Apps.
  • Remove, incorporated above.

Updates in 3.0 that impacted subscriptions:

  • We released app launch behavior.
  • By default, the login/sign up page is disabled.
  • If enabled, users can log in or sign up for an account when the app launches.
    • Logged-in users with a subscription will not encounter the paywall when accessing paywalled content in the app.
    • Logged-in users without a subscription will encounter the paywall when accessing paywalled content in the app, with a message to learn more about restricted content.
    • Logged-out users will encounter the paywall when accessing paywalled content in the app.
  • In 3.0, we released a login at the launch of the app.
  • If this is enabled, the users can sign in there and go create an account.  If they sign in and their user name has a subscription plan, they will not hit a paywall in the app.
  • If they sign in but do not have a subscription plan, they will hit a paywall and receive a message to learn more about restricted content from your website.
  • If they choose to skip signing in, they will hit a paywall if it is enabled.
